The Black Guard is a faction introduced in Supernova.

Mentioned by Fishlabs as "an extremist Nivelian faction that wants to stop the Midorian secession.", they are responsible for igniting the Supernova in the Ginoya system and the attacks on various Midorian Evacuations, as well as against Keith T. Maxwell. Led by Trunt Harval, its ultimate goal is to obliterate the entire Midorian Sector as a retribution to their betrayal against the Nivelian Republic.

After the death of Trunt Harval at the end of the Supernova campaign, the Black Guad has been presumably disbanded.

Trivia[]

  • The Black Guard doesn't have a system in which they are but as Trunt Harval assumed political leadership around the time, they most likely came from Paréah, the capital of the Nivelian Republic .
  • The Black Guard were the only NPCS that utilize the Dark Matter Laser. The damage is significantly nerfed for balancing reasons.
    • The only known Black Guard personnel that does not use this weapon is Trunt Harval, who instead uses the Disruptor Laser, with increased damage per shot. (Due to a bug, Harval sometimes will also use Dark Matter Lasers)
  • Ironically, the Ghost is never used by the Black Guard as a fighting ship, but rather as a prototype for the Specter and Scimitar.
  • The term "Black Guard" is almost never mentioned in-game.
  • Like Pirates, the Specters piloted by the Black Guard has a chance to spawn everywhere (once the Luur Rescue Operation is complete), and will continue to spawn until the campaign ends. They are hostile to all factions.
    • Their spawn rate is not based on system security. For example you could even encounter them in Kothar, Thynome, or even Kaamo (where most NPC ships don't spawn).
  • The Specters they pilot are equipped with a U'Tool that allows them to activate stealth for 10 seconds. However they can be given away by their flames once their health reaches 33%. They also have more health compared to other NPC ships.
  • The Specters are also not affected by Gamma Radiation despite the clear lack of a Gamma Shield - If one goes to Naneroh with a Gamma shield II, then allow the ship to be destroyed by the radiation, the NPC Specters are unaffected
  • When scanned, they will be labelled as "???".
  • Similar to encountering Pirates/Voids, the event of encountering Black Guard ships has its own unique sound track.
  • Their symbol is that of the Abyss engine, the engine Galaxy on Fire uses to run.
  • It seems like some NPCs will attack at the Black Guard Ships no matter they're cloaked or not.
  • The stealth fighters will only seem to cloak if they take damage from ship's weapons or if the player gets too close to them. However, their cloaked spot can also be given away by the distortion of the background, and NPC ships are not decieved.
  • Despite pirates being hostile to them, the Black Guard does not return fire.
  • Transfusion Beams will still absorb energy from them even if they are cloaked, this is the easiest way to pinpoint their clocked location.
