As Keith T. Maxwell was honorably discharged, his money must now come through alternative methods. Freelance missions, or simply Missions in Galaxy on Fire 3D, as players will find out, are a major source of income. Performing these jobs will not only bring in money, but combat experience and, sometimes, valuable goods. These missions vary in complexity and difficulty, but players cannot be choosy for only a few types of these missions will be available in the stations they dock in.

Galaxy on Fire 3D[]

A handful of missions are posted on the job board whenever Keith docks to a planet or space station.

Tapping on one of the available mission types reveals information about the client, the difficulty of the mission, and the mission's reward. If the player taps the Info button below the reward offered, the mission itself is explained in further detail. Many of the missions require little thinking, if any.

Accepting the mission takes Keith into the mission immediately. Failure often results from Keith and his ship being destroyed on the job, while success results in the promised credits being transferred to his account.

Galaxy on Fire 2[]

The phrase "freelance mission" originated from Galaxy on Fire 2, and better reflects its nature.

Instead of reading a job board for missions, clients themselves will appear in space lounges and offer Keith a job when tapped. Their missions often take place in completely different planets and systems, and will not begin until Keith travels to the requested planet. Payment will increase as the player progresses through the game, starting in the modest thousands and ending at substansial hundred-thousands.

Because missions begin only when Keith is in orbit, the player can accept a mission, progress along the storyline, and complete the mission at his or her leisure. There is no penalty for delaying any freelance mission. However, only one such mission can be initiated at a time. Accepting another will bring up a dialog box that asks whether the current mission be retired for the new one.

Many of the missions in Galaxy on Fire 3D return in the sequel, while new ones that take advantage of the new gameplay mechanics are also introduced in the sequel. Most unique missions require a lot of strategy to complete.

Galaxy on Fire 3[]

Freelance missions in GOF3 are largely different in compared to those in GOF1 and GOF2, as well as other missions in GOF3.

Instead of reading a job board or meeting clients, freelances appear directly on the star map along with regular Contract missions and randomly popped-up Emergency missions. Unlike in GOF1 and GOF2, player could only get two random freelances per day, with each of them will appear for 60 ingame minutes to be accepted. The rewards always include 10 Mhaan-tiq.

Freelance is one of the two mission types that Distress Calls and Informers will never appear, they also have only four difficulty (indicated by squares above the green shield icon) instead of the usual twelve (four easy, four ace and four veteran levels).
